LIST OF DIAGRAMS
1. The UK Market For Domestic Windows, By End User Sector, 1994-2003
2. UK Production Of Windows And Doors, By Material, 1998
Although growth in the UK's economic activity has slowed following the recovery of the mid-1990s, the effect this has had on the traditionally volatile construction industry has been subdued during the latter half of the 1990s. As a result, only marginal fluctuations have been registered in the demand for domestic windows. MSI therefore estimate that the market for domestic windows increased by only 2 percent in 1998, to total a value of some 2.09 billion (?2.97 billion) at retail sales prices.
The private sector has accounted for the greatest proportion of the domestic windows market throughout the period under review. Indeed, the proportional share of the market held by the private sector has increased from some 73 percent in 1994 to 75 percent in 1998.
The UK market for double glazed domestic windows increased by 3 percent to 1.41 billion (?2.01 billion) in 1998. The industry faced difficult market conditions due to slow growth in housing construction output and competition amongst double glazing companies forcing down the average price of windows, particularly those with PVC-U frames.
The principal factor which has an impact on demand for domestic windows is the level of housing construction activity. This includes new build and RMI work in both the public and the private sector. Price continues to be an important determinant for demand for domestic windows both in the public and the private sector. The new build sector is particularly responsive to price, and demand for certain types of domestic windows increases as the cost of purchasing those windows decreases.
The UK volume market for domestic windows is expected to record modest rates of growth in volume terms between 1999 and 2003. Indeed, over the forecast period demand for domestic windows is expected to increase by 9 percent in real terms
Average retail selling prices of domestic windows are expected to increase during 2000 and 2001. However, as the market continues to mature the rate of growth in retail selling prices of domestic windows is expected to decelerate in 2002 and 2003. Due to this the market for domestic windows is forecast to increase at a faster rate in volume than in value terms in 2002 and 2003.
MSI have identified certain factors as being critical to the success of companies involved in the UK domestic windows market. These include:
* price/quality differentiation
* customer-driven strategy
* focusing on a particular market segment
* offering finance
* reviewing business management practices
* innovative products
* development of production methods
* use of IT
* effective advertising
The UK market for domestic windows is characterised by a large number of small to medium sized companies and a few large companies that account for a substantial proportion of the total turnover of the industry. The sector is undoubtedly taking on the characteristics of a mature market which is expected to result in rationalisation within the industry.
