EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK domestic windows market increased by 5 percent in 1997 in nominal terms to a value of £2.05 billion (ECU3.05 billion) at retail selling prices. MSI believe that the upturn in the UK market value for domestic windows reflected the increased level of activity in the UK housing construction market during the year.

MSI estimate that the largest proportion of demand for domestic windows in 1997 was attributable to private sector sales. During the year demand by the private sector represented 75 percent of the total UK domestic windows market. Sales to the public sector accounted for the remaining 25 percent.

Sales of domestic windows to the public sector are believed to have been constrained during the years 1995 and 1996. This was as a result of the restriction on reinvestment by the Conservative Government of capital receipts from sales of council houses. However, the Labour Government announced in July 1997 that it would release these funds. MSI believe that as a consequence demand by the public sector for domestic windows has been stimulated in 1997 and is forecast to increase during the next five years.

Sales of domestic windows for refurbishment building work in the UK increased by 3 percent in nominal terms to a value of £1.7 billion (ECU2.5 billion) in 1997. In the refurbishment sector PVC-U window frames accounted for the largest proportion of the total market value of the sector during 1997, a trend which has been evident throughout the 1993-1997 period. Indeed, in 1997 PVC-U domestic window frames accounted for 84 percent of the refurbishment market, representing £1.5 billion (ECU2.2 billion).

The UK market for domestic windows for new build projects exceeded a value of £0.3 billion (ECU0.4 billion) in 1997, representing a rise of 18 percent. Throughout the period under review timber frames have accounted for the greater proportion of the new build sector. However, MSI believe that during 1997 the material lost market share to PVC-U frames.

The UK domestic windows market is affected by numerous factors. MSI believe that a significant influence on the demand for domestic windows is the level of housing construction activity in the UK.

MSI forecast that the UK domestic windows market will achieve further growth over the next five years, of 7 percent at constant 1997 prices. It is expected that demand in both the private and public sectors will remain buoyant throughout the forecast period, although declines in public sector market value are expected in 2000 and 2001.

MSI have identified a number of factors which are believed to be critical to the success of domestic windows manufacturers. These include:

- price competitiveness
- quality
- awareness of customer needs
- effective sales and marketing initiatives
- continued investment in research and development

The UK distribution structure for domestic windows is characterised by the supply of windows through direct sales. However, MSI believe that the proportion of windows distributed through builders' merchants and DIY outlets has slightly increased as a result of the rise in the number of self-built houses in the UK.

Characteristically the UK domestic window industry is relatively fragmented. In recent years a number of acquisitions, mergers and disposals have occurred. MSI believe that these changes reflect the gradual move towards a more consolidated industry structure.
