EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Following growth rates of 2 percent per year since 1997 the UK market for domestic windows reached a value of £2.12 billion (Euro3.56 billion) at retail sales prices in 2000. The increase in demand between 1997 and 2000 was mainly fuelled by growth in housing construction output, especially in the private sector.

Within the market for windows for the private sector, refurbishment work accounted for as much as 80 percent of the total value in 2000. The importance of refurbishment work is even more significant for windows used for public sector work, where RMI accounted for 92 percent of the total value during the same year.

The level of housing activity is the principal factor affecting demand for domestic windows in the UK. This includes both refurbishment and new build work in the private and public sectors. Value for money is also important as consumers consider long term benefits over short term gains. Fashion trends are also a determinant of demand, encouraging consumers to replace existing windows long before necessary.

MSI forecast that the domestic windows market will increase in terms of volume between 2001 and 2005, albeit at a slow rate. Indeed, MSI expect that demand for domestic windows will increase by some 6 percent in volume terms. During the same period the market is expected to increase at a marginally faster rate in value terms.

There are a number of different factors that contribute to the success of a company in the UK domestic window industry. MSI believe that the most important factors are:

· value for money
· level of customer service
· new product development
· awareness and adherence to environmental concerns
· sales and marketing strategies
· the review of management practices

MSI believe that the industry structure comprises mainly of small to medium sized firms with a few larger firms which generate the largest proportion of total market value. However, during the review period a degree of consolidation in the UK domestic window industry has occurred. The rationalisation within the industry is one sign that the domestic window market in the UK is mature.
