EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
| 1. KEY FINDINGS |
| The UK market for thermal insulation materials is projected to
increase by some 8 percent in 2002. The value of the market has increased
throughout the review period, albeit at a varying rate |
| MSI believe that the building thermal insulation sector
represented the largest proportion of the UK thermal insulation market in value
terms between 1998 and 2001 and will continue to do so in 2002 |
| MSI project that the building thermal insulation sector will
increase by some 11 percent in 2002. Furthermore, the industrial thermal
insulation market is estimated to have decreased by some 3 percent between 1998
and 2001 to a value of
£159.8 million (257.3 million). MSI project that a
further decrease, albeit marginal, will occur in 2002 |
| MSI believe that the following factors affect the demand for
thermal insulation in the UK. |
| - the amount of construction activity in the UK |
| - the state of the UK economy |
| - reductions in carbon dioxide emissions |
| - government schemes and initiatives |
| - the impact of changes to the Building Regulations |
| - greater consumer awareness of the benefits of thermal insulation |
| - new and innovative technology |
| MSI believe that wall insulation accounted for the largest
proportion, some 49 percent, of the UK building thermal insulation sector in
2001. Furthermore, some 80 percent of the wall insulation sector was accounted
for by cavity wall insulation in 2001. A further 13 percent was accounted for
by external wall insulation, whilst internal wall insulation accounted for the
remaining 7 percent |
| MSI estimate that the UK market for industrial thermal insulation decreased by some 3 percent between 1998 and 2001. Indeed, in 2001 the value of the UK market for industrial thermal insulation was £159.8 million (257.3 million) |
| MSI believe that the process plant sector is one of the main end users of industrial thermal insulation in the UK. Indeed, the process plant sector is projected to account for some 52 percent of the total UK market for industrial thermal insulation in 2002. However, the process plant sector has decreased in proportional importance since 1999, when it accounted for some 58 percent of the total market for industrial thermal insulation. In contrast, the heating and ventilation sector has increased in proportional importance since 1999 |
| MSI believe that the value of the UK market for building thermal insulation will increase throughout the forecast period, although the rate of growth will slow towards the end of the review period. In contrast, the industrial thermal insulation market is forecast to continue its long term decline |
| MSI believe that there are a number of factors that are critical to the success of companies operating within the UK thermal insulation market. These include: |
| - diversification |
| - identification of market trends |
| - close working relations |
| - adherence to quality standards |
| - the use of IT and computer technology |
| - staff training |
| - environmental issues |
| - renewable and alternative thermal insulation products |
| Trends in the UK market for thermal insulation products, are shown in the following diagram by sector between 1998 and 2007. |
