EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for thermal insulation materials is estimated to have increased by 3 percent in 1999 to reach a value of œ457.1 million (euro708.5 million). Despite a decrease in the level of process plant expenditure, growth in the value of the market reflects the buoyancy of the UK construction industry during the year.

In 1999 the building thermal insulation sector is estimated to have accounted for 65 percent of the total thermal insulation market in value terms, with industrial thermal insulation accounting for the remaining 35 percent. The proportional importance of the building thermal insulation sector has increased from some 62 percent in 1995 at the expense of the industrial thermal insulation sector.

The largest proportion of the total building thermal insulation market was represented by wall insulation materials throughout the review period. Indeed, MSI believe that this product sector accounted for some 52 percent of the total value of the UK building thermal insulation market in 19 The UK market for wall insulation increased by some 19 percent during the review period. MSI believe that growth in the market has been stimulated by the rise in new build construction work during the review period.

Mineral wool is estimated to account for 43 percent of the value of the UK market for industrial thermal insulation during 1999. Rigid foam, calcium silicate, cellular glass, and other materials represented the remainder of the market. Mineral wool has continued to represent the largest proportion of the UK industrial thermal insulation market between 1995 and 1999. However, the proportional importance of mineral wool has marginally diminished during the review period as other materials have increased in popularity.

Factors affecting the demand for thermal insulation in the UK include the following:

The total market for building and industrial thermal insulation is expected to continue to grow between 2000 and 2004, despite a decrease in demand for industrial thermal insulation in 2000, 2003 and 2004.

Growth of the UK building thermal insulation market is expected to decelerate between 2000 and 20 Indeed, MSI believe the value of the building thermal insulation market will grow by 13 percent in real value terms during the forecast period. This reflects the expected slowdown in UK construction activity between 2000 and 2004.

The UK market for industrial thermal insulation is forecast to decrease by some 2 percent between 2000 and 2004, despite marginal increases in 2001 and 20 Indeed, reduced investment by the end user industries is expected to affect this market significantly throughout the forecast period.

In 1999 some 92 percent of the value of the building thermal insulation market was distributed through insulation stockists and 87 percent of industrial thermal insulation was distributed through the same channel. Only 8 percent of building thermal insulation and 13 percent of industrial thermal insulation is estimated to be distributed directly to end users.

MSI believe that price and quality differentiation, diversification, identification of market trends and developing long-term planning, the use of IT, adherence to British Standards, customer-driven company strategy, ensuring correct installation and consideration of alternative insulation materials are important for the continued success of companies operating in the UK thermal insulation market.

The building thermal insulation manufacturing industry is relatively concentrated in terms of the number of companies operating in the industry. Indeed, some nine companies accounted for approximately 65 percent of the market in 1999. Moreover, some industrial thermal insulation manufacturers specialise in certain products or within specific end use sectors.
