Economic activity in the UK has slowed down from the recovery of the mid 1990s, but the effect this has had on the traditionally volatile construction industry has been subdued during the late 1990s. Consequently, MSI estimate that the UK market for roofing materials increased by 3 percent in 1998 to some 93.2 million square metres, by roof area covered.
Slates and tiles accounted for the largest proportion of the total market for roofing materials in the UK between 1994 and 1998. The continuing popularity of these materials can be attributed to the trend towards the specification of more traditional materials and tighter regional planning regulations governing the types of roofing material which can be used on greenfield and brownfield sites.
Metal roofing accounted for the second largest sector of the market in 1998, accounting for some 32 percent of the total market, by roof area covered. Steel and aluminium roofing together form by far the largest proportion of the metal roofing market, although traditional metals, including lead, copper and zinc, are steadily gaining market share as campaigners, trade associations and architectural awards raise their profile.
Flat roofing is estimated to have accounted for 25 percent of total market, by roof area covered in 1998. Market demand for flat roofing improved slightly during 1998 due to two main factors. Firstly construction activity increased within the flat roofing market's two main end user sectors, commercial and industrial buildings. Secondly, trade associations promoted the technological developments that have taken place in the last 20 years together with the cost effectiveness of flat roofing materials.
The UK market for roofing materials is affected by numerous factors including:
MSI estimate that the UK market for roof glazing and rooflights increased by 2 percent in 1998 to reach a value of £53.3 million (ECU76.8 million) at manufacturers' selling prices. The market for roof glazing and rooflights is principally affected by activity within the commercial, industrial and public building sector, both in terms of new and RMI work. Both roof glazing systems and rooflights are used in hotels, hospitals, sports facilities, entrance canopies and walkways as well as other commercial and industrial buildings and applications.
The UK roofing materials manufacturing industry comprises companies ranging from small, regional manufacturers to large corporations. Small manufacturers typically develop specialist knowledge in one type of roofing material such as tiles or roofing felts. Larger manufacturers tend to supply a larger range of roofing materials and accessories and some have extended their products to include other building materials.
During 1997 and 1998, levels of growth in the construction market have remained stable and this has contributed to a slight upturn in demand for roofing contracting services. However, MSI believe that pressure on contractors to submit competitive tenders has restricted growth, and the value market for roofing contracting is estimated to have increased only marginally during 1998.
