EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for roofing materials is estimated to have increased by 1 percent in 1997 in terms of roof area covered to a level of 89.2 million m². MSI believe that the growth in the market is a reflection of the continued recovery in the levels of construction work in the UK.

Slates and tiles accounted for the largest proportion of the total roofing market in terms of roof area covered in 1997. Natural materials such as clay tiles and slates have gained market share within the sector. This has been at the expense of concrete tiles. However, concrete tiles still led the slate and tile market in the UK.

Metal roofing is estimated to have accounted for 33 percent of the market in 1997. Throughout the period in review, steel represented the largest sector of the metal roofing market. MSI estimate that steel covered an area of 25 million m² of roofs in 1997. Aluminium accounted for the second largest proportion of the metal roofing market, with a share of 11 percent. The remaining 3 percent was attributed to sales of the traditional metals, lead, copper and zinc.

Roofing felts account for the largest sector of the flat roofing market. Indeed, MSI estimate that in 1997 an area of 18 million m² of roofs was covered by this material. Some 10 percent of the flat roofing market is accounted for by single ply PVC and the remaining 5 percent by asphalt.

The UK market for roofing materials is affected by a number of factors. An important factor which affects demand is the performance of the UK construction industry, which in turn is influenced by the economy. Other aspects which impact upon demand can be broadly categorised into environmental and legislation issues.

The roof glazing market in the UK has shown significant increases between 1993 and 1997. The growth in demand has been attributable to the increased activity in the construction industry and to the growing awareness of roof glazing's internal environmental benefits and aesthetic appeal. MSI believe that during 1997 the value of the market reached £28.4 million in nominal terms.

The UK market for rooflights increased by 2 percent in nominal value terms in 1996 to reach a total of £23.3 million at manufacturers' selling prices. The nominal growth in the market has been maintained by refurbishment work in the industrial and commercial sectors. MSI believe that further growth of 3 percent occurred in the market during 1997 as the rooflights market benefited from the improvements within the construction industry and the increased awareness of the design benefits which rooflights offer.

The UK roofing materials manufacturing industry is characterised by a proliferation of companies. Smaller firms within the industry characteristically produce only one material type. Medium to larger firms have increasingly extended their product ranges in recent years to include associated materials and tools.

MSI estimate that the UK market for roofing contracting reached the value of £908.5 million in 1997 representing a marginal 1 percent rise on the previous year.
