EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for industrial flooring materials is projected to increase by 4 percent in 1998 to a value of £38.68 million (ECU57.63 million) at msp. This growth is believed to reflect improved economic activity, increased construction output and end user activity.

Seamless flooring products continued to account for a significant proportion of the industrial flooring market in 1998, representing some 90 percent of the value of industrial flooring materials sold. This proportion increased marginally between 1994 and 1998, reflecting the increased popularity of seamless flooring products.

Ceramic tile flooring is projected to account for around 8 percent of the total industrial flooring market by value in 1998, whilst other types of industrial flooring, comprising chemical resistant bricks and mastic asphalt, are believed to account for approximately 2 percent of the market.

Demand for industrial flooring materials in the UK is principally affected by:

- the level of construction output
- economic factors
- legislation
- incidence rate of injuries in end user industries
- the performance of end user industries

Some 64 percent of industrial flooring materials sold by manufacturers are projected to be used in repair and maintenance applications in 1998. The remaining 36 percent is used in new work situations.

MSI forecast that the UK market for industrial flooring materials will increase by 4 percent in real value terms during 1999. This growth rate is expected to be repeated during 2000. However, in 2001 the growth rate is forecast to slow to 1 percent. In 2002 and 2003 the UK market for seamless industrial flooring materials is expected to decline, reflecting the downturn in economic and construction output.

MSI have identified a number of factors that are critical to the success of UK manufacturers of industrial flooring. These include:

- product innovation
- pricing strategies
- establishing long term relationships with contractors/applicators
- technical backup
- promotion and advertising
