EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 1997, the UK value market for domestic doors increased by 2 percent to some ?703 million (euro1.05 billion). As the volume market for domestic doors increased by 3 percent during 1998, a corresponding increase was seen in the value market for domestic doors and the value of the market increased to some ?722 million (euro1.03 billion).

The UK market for domestic doors in the private sector is believed to have increased by 4 percent in 1998 to reach a value of some ?515 million (euro731 million) as the market benefited from continued growth in private sector construction activity both in terms of new build and RMI work.

The UK market for domestic doors in the public sector has followed an unsteady trend throughout the review period.

During 1998, growth in the UK market for domestic doors within the public sector was restricted by the sharp decline in new build activity and weakness of RMI activity. Consequently, the value of the market for domestic doors declined by 1 percent to ?207 (euro294 million).

Slow growth in terms of private sector completions during 1998 resulted in a proportional increase in the market share of domestic doors for refurbishment work. Indeed, refurbishment work accounted for some 71 percent of the value of the market for domestic doors in the private sector in 1998, whilst new build work accounted for the remaining 29 percent.

During 1998 substantial growth in the market was restricted as public sector expenditure on RMI work was reduced. Consequently, the UK market for domestic doors in the public sector refurbishment work declined marginally during 1998 from ?188.6 million (euro281 million) to ?188.4 million (euro267.5 million).

Between 1994 and 1998 timber doors and door frames have continued to account for the most significant proportion of the replacement door market since the majority of replacement doors are internal, where timber is the preferred material. As the market for timber and PVC-U doors in the refurbishment sector becomes saturated, many large suppliers are concentrating their marketing activities on the new build sector, where market share gains are still possible.

MSI estimate that in 1998 internal doors accounted for some 72 percent of the domestic door market in volume terms or some 8.3 million door and door frames. External doors accounted for the remaining 28 percent or 3.3 million doors and door frames during the same year.

As well as trends in construction activity, MSI have identified a number of factors that affect demand for domestic doors and door frames. These include:

* changes in building practices * price

* range of products available

* social trends

* regional factors

* whole life costing

* environmental concerns

* seasonal changes

The value market for domestic doors is expected to follow a similar, yet slightly less volatile trend to the volume market during the forecast period. Indeed, the UK value market for domestic doors is expected to increase by 2 percent in 1999 and a further 3 percent in 2000, before growth rates fall slightly in 2001 and modest decreases in the value of the market are forecast for 2002 and 2003.

MSI believe that the UK market for patio doors declined by 3 percent during 1998 to a total value of some ?307 million (euro436 million). This follows a fairly stable period in the patio door market, where year on year changes in the value of the market have been marginal. MSI forecast that the UK market for patio doors will grow throughout the first half of the forecast period, with growth rates remaining below 4 percent. However, a downturn in the size of the value market is expected in 2002 and 2003.

Levels of growth in UK production of windows and doors have declined during 1997 and 1998 despite reports that production techniques are becoming more sophisticated and lead times shorter. MSI believe that modest market growth during 1997 and 1998 restricted significant increases in production by constraining demand within the UK.

A relatively high level of fragmentation is present in the domestic door industry, with companies ranging from large multinationals to specialist craftsmen. In terms of door installation, companies tend to operate on a regional level. Some of the national brands are gaining in popularity and recognition, and the lower prices that some large companies are able to offer through economies of scale have impacted upon smaller companies. However, there is still a demand for the personalised service that a local door supplier can offer.
