EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI estimate that the UK domestic doors and door frames market increased by 2 percent to a value of œ703 million (ECU1047 million) in nominal terms during 1997, following two years of decline.

The UK domestic door and door frames market increased by 3 percent in volume terms in 1997 stimulated by the upturn in UK housing construction output and in UK housing market activity. Indeed, total housing construction output is estimated to have increased by 8 percent to a value of £23.7 billion (ECU35.3 billion) during the year and the number of property transactions is believed to have risen by 16 percent to 1.4 million transactions.

Sales of replacement domestic doors and door frames has accounted for the largest proportion of the total market in value terms between 1993 and 1997. In 1997 sales of domestic doors and door frames for refurbishment work are estimated to have accounted for 77 percent of the market, with domestic doors for new build housing projects accounting for the remaining 23 percent.

Timber domestic doors continued to account for the most significant proportion of the home improvement and new build markets between 1993 and 1997. MSI believe that the material's proportional importance in the domestic doors market reflects the volume of internal timber doors specified.

Internal domestic doors accounted for 71 percent of the total market in volume terms in 1997 with external doors representing the remaining 29 percent.

The principal factor affecting demand for domestic doors in the UK is the level of housing construction activity which in turn is influenced by a number of economic factors. Further factors affecting demand for domestic doors include:

- level of housing market activity
- government policy
- door prices
- replacement cycles of domestic doors
- social trends
- environmental concerns

MSI forecast that the UK domestic doors and door frames market will peak in value terms in 2000. The market in volume terms is forecast to increase by 4 percent between 1998 and 2002, as the domestic doors market benefits from the upturn in the UK housing construction activity for both public and private sector housing.

The UK patio door market has remained relatively stable in value terms between 1993 and 1997. In 1997 sales of side hung patio doors increased by 6 percent to a value of £189 million (ECU282 million). Sales of side hung patio doors have increased in value terms throughout the period under review at the expense of sliding patio doors.

MSI believe that domestic doors for new build housing projects are predominately distributed directly to UK housebuilders or through builders' and timber merchants. Do-It-Yourself outlets have increased in importance in the distribution of refurbishment domestic doors.

MSI have identified a number of factors which are believed to be critical to the success of domestic door manufacturers. These factors include:

- price competitiveness
- quality
- effective sales and marketing initiatives
- awareness of customer needs

The UK domestic door industry is fragmented to a relatively high degree. However, in recent years there has been a moderate amount of acquisitional activity in the industry, indicating a trend towards more consolidation in industry structure.
