EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI estimate that the UK market for concrete and
concrete products increased by 8 percent to reach a value of £2.09 billion
(ECU3.11 billion) during 1997. This growth was attributable to increases in
construction activity both in terms of new build and repair, maintenance and
improvement work.
Ready mixed concrete accounted for some 46 percent of the
value of concrete and concrete products sold in the UK during 1997. The second
largest sector of the UK concrete and concrete products market is concrete
bricks and blocks which represented 22 percent of total value in 1997, whereas sales
of bagged cement represented 10 percent of the market during this period. The
remainder of the market was accounted for by paving & flagstones, precast
structural concrete, concrete roofing tiles and concrete pipes and
flagstones.
The market for concrete and concrete products in
the UK is principally affected by:
- - construction trends
- - economic factors
- - end users' performance
- - performance of competitive
products
The market for concrete and concrete products in
the UK is forecast to rise by 12 percent in real terms between 1998 and 2001. This is
expected to reflect the forecast improvement in the UK economy and the positive
effect that this is expected to have on the construction industry.
MSI have identified a number of factors that are
crucial to the success of suppliers operating in the concrete and concrete
products market. These factors are largely determined by the structures of the
various industry sectors together with the level of growth within each market
segment. However, a number of factors have been identified as being critical to
most sectors:
- - quality
- - customer service and technical
back-up
- - whole life costing concept
- - investment in research and
development
- - environmental considerations
- - closer working relationships with contractors
and distributors
Despite a strong rise in UK exports of concrete
and concrete products over the period 1993 to 1997, the UK trade deficit
deepened to £14.7 million (ECU21.9 million) in 1997. This reflected a 16 percent
increase in imports during the year.
