EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI believe that growth of 4 percent in volume terms and
3 percent in value terms was recorded in the UK market for ceramic tiles during 1997.
This growth is believed to have reflected improved conditions in the
construction industry, the housing market and the increase in DIY expenditure
as a result of building society demutalisation payments.
Wall tiles continued to account for a substantial
proportion of the ceramic tiles market in 1997, representing some 80 percent of the
value of tiles sold. It is believed that this proportion decreased between 1993
and 1997, reflecting the increased popularity of ceramic floor
tiles.
MSI believe that growth in the retail sector has
been greater than in the contract sector due to the major expansion by the
specialist tile retailers, the current trend for tiles as a form of home
decoration and restricted investment by the traditional contract end
users.
The demand for ceramic tiles in the UK is
principally affected by the level of construction activity, both in terms of
new build and repair and maintenance. Other significant factors affecting
demand include housing market activity, changes in consumers' expenditure on
DIY products and fashion trends.
Imports are very prominent in the UK ceramic tiles
market and are believed to account for 75 percent of the total volume market in 1997.
Import penetration is believed to have increased significantly between 1993 and
1997.
UK production of ceramic tiles fell between 1993
and 1995. However, MSI believe that growth was recorded during 1997 as a result
of the increased popularity of larger tile sizes, floor tiles and premium range
tiles. Also some of the larger UK manufacturers, most notably Pilkington's
Tiles and H & R Johnson, have undertaken investment allowing them to
compete more effectively with low cost imports.
The UK market for terrazzo flooring is estimated
to have increased continuously in both volume and value terms between 1994 and
1997 reflecting the rise in construction activity, particularly in the retail
sector.
MSI believe that the market for ceramic tiles will
increase in both volume and value terms between 1998 and 2002 as the trends for
large, added value tiles continues. The floor tiles market is expected to grow
at a greater rate than the wall tiles market during the five year forecast
period.
