KEY FINDINGS

      The UK volume market for ceramic tiles increased by some 4 percent to 46.4 million m2 in 2001. Furthermore, the value of the market for ceramic tiles in the UK reached £296 million (€476 million) in the same year.

     MSI believe that the UK market for ceramic wall tiles decreased by some 3 percent in volume terms to 32.0 million m2 in 2001. However, the value of the UK market for ceramic wall tiles increased by some 2 percent to £228 million (€367 million) in 2001.   

MSI believe that the UK market for ceramic floor tiles increased by some 24 percent in volume terms to 14.4 million m2 in 2001. Furthermore, the value of the UK market for ceramic floor tiles recorded an 8 percent increase to £68 million (€109 million).  

The proportional importance of the UK ceramic wall tile market has decreased, during the review period. In contrast, the proportional importance for ceramic floor tiles has continued to increase as they become more popular as a floorcovering through media awareness such as DIY programmes, and as hygiene requirements increase.     

MSI believe that there are a number of factors that affect the demand for ceramic tiles in the UK. These include:

MSI believe that the UK floor tiles market will continue to grow at a faster rate than the UK market for wall tiles during the forecast period. MSI believe that continuing media coverage from DIY and home improvement programmes will stimulate demand for ceramic tiles further.   

UK imports of ceramic tiles have accounted for a significant proportion of the UK ceramic tile market during the review period. Indeed, the volume of imports increased by 71 percent to 65.2 million square metres throughout the review period.
