EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK ceramic tile market reached a volume of 44.7 million square metres in 2000, an increase of 3 percent compared with 1999. Furthermore, MSI estimate that in the same year the value of the market grew by 3 percent to reach £287 million (€456 million).

MSI believe that the UK market for ceramic floor tiles is growing at a faster rate than the UK market for ceramic wall tiles. Moreover, during the review period, the proportional importance of wall tiles has declined in value terms from 81 percent in 1996 to 78 percent in 2000.

The factors which affect the demand for ceramic tiles include:

MSI forecast that the ceramic tile market will continue to grow in both volume and value terms between 2001 and 2005. This will largely be due to the expected increase in construction output in Great Britain, in addition to the popularity of DIY activity amongst consumers.

The UK market for ceramic tiles features a high level of import penetration. This is largely due to the competition from low cost countries, such as Spain and Turkey. However, the leading UK manufacturers are identified as being BCT, H&R Johnson Tiles and Pilkington's Tiles.
