EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Demand for architectural ironmongery in the UK is projected to increase by 3 percent in real terms, which excludes the effects of inflation, in 1998. This increase is believed to reflect the growth in construction activity during the year both in terms of new build and repair & maintenance work.

The largest sector of the UK architectural ironmongery market is that of door furniture which is projected to represent some 31 percent of the market in 1998. Some 28 percent of the UK architectural ironmongery market is projected to be accounted for by door & window locks in 1998, with door & window hinges expected to account for a further 9 percent of the market. The remainder of the market is accounted for by door controls, window furniture, parts and other products.

Demand for architectural ironmongery in the UK is principally

affected by:
- construction activity
- economic factors
- housing market activity
- window and door production
- government policy
- insurance industry
- seasonal demand

The UK market for architectural ironmongery is forecast to grow by 3 percent in real terms during 1999. This growth rate is expected to be repeated during 2000. In 2001 and 2002 the growth rate is forecast to slow to 2 percent and 1 percent respectively. However, in 2003 demand is expected to decline.

MSI have identified a number of factors that are critical to the success of UK manufacturers of architectural ironmongery. These include:

- price competitiveness
- product reliability
- offering a full product range
- availability of products and delivery times
- resolution of product defects
- identifying customer needs
- sales and marketing activity
- keeping abreast of new standards
- distribution channels used

The level of concentration in the UK architectural ironmongery industry varies between product sectors. For example, in 1998 the four leading suppliers of door controls are expected to account for over 70 percent of sales. Overall, the industry has become more concentrated reflecting a number of acquisitions and mergers, such as Williams' acquisition of Chubb Security.
