EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The value of the UK market for architectural ironmongery is believed to have increased by 3 percent at manufacturers' selling price in 1999. The increase reflects, in part, significant increases in private housing and private commercial construction.

The door furniture sector accounted for 31 percent of the total value of the UK architectural ironmongery market in 1999. Indeed, the sector has continued to account for the largest proportion of the total UK market for architectural ironmongery. The second largest sector of the architectural ironmongery market in the UK is that of door and window locks, which accounted for 27 percent of the total market in value terms in 1999.

MSI believe the market for architectural ironmongery in the UK is affected by a number of factors, including:

* construction activity

* economic factors

* housing market activity

* window and door production

* insurance industry

* social trends

* seasonal demand

The demand for architectural ironmongery in the UK is forecast to rise by 14 percent in real terms between 2000 and 2004. This is expected to reflect the forecast improvement in the UK economy and the positive effect this is expected to have on the construction industry.

The UK trade deficit in architectural ironmongery increased in 1999 by 6 percent. This reflected a 3 percent increase in the levels of imports, whilst exports declined by some 4 percent in 1999. The level of import penetration during the year is believed to have remained stable compared with 1998 at 43 percent.

MSI believe that factors critical to the success of UK manufacturers of architectural hardware include:

* price/quality differentiation

* keeping abreast of new standards

* safety implications

* competitive practices

* provision of correct data

* getting specification right

* comprehension of hardware requirements

* taking advantage of new initiatives

* using IT to communicate

* offering longer periods of guarantee

* offering new products

* product branding

The level of concentration in the UK architectural ironmongery industry varies by product sector. The four leading companies in the locks market and the door controls market are reported to have accounted for 55 percent and 73 percent of the market respectively in 1999.
