EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The UK market for pharmaceutical packaging is
estimated to have increased continuously between 1992 and 1996, culminating in
growth of 9 percent to £267.3 million at manufacturers selling prices in
1996.
Containers accounted for the largest proportion of
the pharmaceutical packaging market between 1992 and 1996. In 1996 this sector
is estimated to have accounted for 25 percent of the market value. However, this
sector's market share has recorded the largest decline during the 1990s due to
the impact of the patient pack initiative and pharmaceutical manufacturers'
consequent substitution by blister packs. Similarly, this substitution has
contributed towards the estimated decline in market share of caps and closures
to 11 percent.
The markets for pharmaceutical cartons, leaflets
and labels and blister & strip packs and sachets have all benefited from
the implementation of the patient pack initiative. Together these sectors have
increased their market shares to account for 45 percent of pharmaceutical packaging
value.
The principal driving forces behind growth in the
pharmaceutical packaging market have been the impact of the patient pack
initiative, ethical to over-the-counter switching, the trend towards self
medication, increased health consciousness and rising healthcare
costs.
Growth in the UK market for pharmaceutical
packaging is projected to increase in real terms to 8 percent in 1997. This increase
is expected to reflect a number of factors, although the continued
implementation of the patient pack initiative, until the end of 1998, will be
the primary driving force.
During the 1990s the UK pharmaceutical packaging
industry has become more concentrated. Given the high barriers to entry and the
attractive returns available, a number of larger manufacturers have sought to
achieve critical mass through a series of acquisitions. This trend has been
particularly evident in the cartons sector, where a trend towards one-stop
shopping has emerged.
