KEY FINDINGS

• The value of the UK market for pharmaceutical packaging increased by 41 percent during the review period, to reach a value of £397.8 million (€640.5 million) in 2001. ·
• The largest sector of the UK pharmaceutical market during the review period was the carton sector, which accounted for 28 percent of the UK pharmaceutical packaging market in 2001. ·
• The containers sector is the second largest sector of the pharmaceutical packaging market, with a proportional importance of 20 percent in 2001. Moreover, prior to 1997 the containers sector accounted for the largest proportion of the total market for pharmaceutical packaging. ·
• The value of the UK market for labels and leaflets is estimated to have increased throughout the review period, rising by some 51 percent in value between 1997 and 2001. MSI believe that this sector will continue to show significant growth during the forecast period as a result of increasing demand for information and security. ·
• There are a number of factors that are critical to the success of operators within the UK pharmaceutical packaging industry, including the provision of high quality products, innovation, selection of raw materials, customisation of specialised packaging, compliance with legislation and high hygiene standards. ·
• MSI forecast that the total UK market for pharmaceutical packaging will increase by 22 percent in real terms between 2002 and 2006. The other pharmaceutical packaging sector, which includes inhalers, drug delivery systems, unit dose liquid products such as eye and ear drops and transdermal patches, is expected to achieve one of the most significant growth rates between 2002 and 2006. Indeed, the sector is expected to rise by 29 percent in real terms during the forecast period. ·
• MSI believe that cartons will continue to account for the most substantial proportion of the market during the forecast period. Indeed, it is expected that the sector will account for some 29 percent of the total value market by 2006. ·
