EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI believe that the UK market for pharmaceutical packaging increased by some 33 percent during the review period in value terms. In 1999 the UK pharmaceutical packaging market amounted to œ327.7 million (euro507.9 million) compared with œ246.2 million (euro297.9 million) in 19 MSI believe that the pharmaceutical cartons sector was the largest sector of the market in 1999, accounting for some 25 percent of the market.

MSI believe that growth of the pharmaceutical packaging market between 1995 and 1999 is largely attributable to a number of factors, which include:

* the ageing population in the UK

* the manufacturing of more expensive packaging options

* an increase in the demand for over-the-counter medicines and self medication

* the patient pack initiative

The sectors for pharmaceutical cartons, leaflets & labels and blister & strip packs and sachets achieved the highest growth rates during the review period, predominately as a result of the trend towards the use of patient packs for dispensing pharmaceuticals. In total, these sectors collectively had a proportional importance of 49 percent in value terms during 19 MSI believe that the proportional importance of these sectors will increase further during the forecast period.

The demand for pharmaceutical packaging in the UK is affected by a number of factors. These include:

* demographics

* prescription charges

* performance of the UK pharmaceutical industry

* compatibility of raw materials

* legislation

Demand in the UK market for pharmaceutical packaging is forecast to increase by some 26 percent between 2000 and 20 The increase in the size of the market will reflect further use of patient packs by the UK pharmaceutical industry, together with the development of new forms of packaging in an effort to reduce counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals during the forecast period. The labels & leaflets sector is expected to achieve the strongest growth rates, in comparison with other sectors, between 2000 and 20 Growth of the labels & leaflets sector will be largely attributable to the requirement to comply with the EU labelling directive and to increase product security.

MSI believe that there are a number of factors that are critical to the success of pharmaceutical packaging companies, including:

* high quality packaging

* innovative packaging ideas

* marketing

* regulatory conformity

* implementation of Just-In-Time production techniques

* security

* high levels of hygiene

A high degree of consolidation has occurred in the UK pharmaceutical packaging industry during the review period. It is believed that the acquisitions and mergers, which occurred between 1995 and 1999, have facilitated the provision of one-stop-shopping for pharmaceutical companies, and have simultaneously increased the market shares and geographical presence of the companies operating in this sector.
