KEY FINDINGS

MSI believe that the total volume of the UK MAP retail market has increased by a substantial 48 percent between 1997 and 2001 to reach a total of 2.5 million tonnes of food products in 2001 ·

In volume terms, fresh fruit and vegetables accounted for the largest proportion of food volumes packed under MAP. Indeed, in 2001, fresh fruit and vegetables accounted for 29 percent of the total volume of food packed under MAP ·

Preformed trays were the most utilised packaging system in 2001, accounting for 38 percent of the market. Growth in the use of preformed trays is believed to have occurred at the expense of thermoformed tray systems ·

MSI believe that there are a number of factors that have helped stimulate demand for MAP in the UK. These include:

The UK MAP retail market is expected to show annual growth between 2002 and 2006. Indeed, the overall market is forecast to increase by 30 percent over this period. This growth is illustrated in the following diagram.
