EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The UK market for commercial and industrial cleaning substances increased by 15 percent in value terms between 1995 and 19 Indeed, the value of the commercial and industrial cleaning substance market increased by 4 percent in 1999 to a value of 574 million (euro890 million).
Some 47 percent of the total cleaning substance market was attributed to sales of floor products in 19 The proportional importance of floor cleaning substances is expected to decrease marginally between 2000 and 2004 as a result of the increased use of floor cleaning machines which consume less chemicals.
In-house cleaners are estimated to have accounted for 61 percent of the value of the commercial and industrial cleaning substances market in 19 However, MSI believe that the proportional importance of contract cleaners has increased during the review period at the expense of in-house cleaners following outsourcing trends amongst end users.
Factors affecting the demand for commercial and industrial cleaning substances in the UK, include:
* trends in construction output
* the emphasis on cost effectiveness
* increased popularity of cleaning machines
* increased levels of competition
* increased popularity of cleaning machines
* number of public toilets
* trends in individual commercial and industrial sectors
* increased trends towards diluting
MSI forecast that the UK market for commercial and industrial cleaning substances will increase by 11 percent in real terms between 2000 and 20 Factors, including the expected increase in popularity of cleaning machines, dilution control and forecast trends in construction output are expected to have an impact on the value of the UK cleaning substances market during the forecast period.
In 1999 the UK market for commercial and industrial cleaning machines increased by 5 percent to 141 million (euro219 million). Demand for commercial and industrial cleaning machines has been stimulated as an increasing number of companies have recognised the long-term cost benefits related to the switch from manual cleaning to machine cleaning.
MSI estimate that in 1999 hard floor cleaning machines accounted for 57 percent of the total commercial and industrial cleaning machine market in value terms. Furthermore, carpeted floor cleaning machines represented 33 percent of the market value, whilst the increasing popularity of pressure cleaners resulted in this sector representing the remaining 10 percent of the market.
The leading hard floor cleaning machines continued to be tub vacuum cleaners in 19 However, MSI believe that demand for multifunctional machines is rising. Indeed, between 1995 and 1999 the market value of scrubber/dryers increased by 26 percent to reach a value of 27.8 million (euro43.1 million) at rsp.
The cleaning machines market is forecast to increase by 21 percent in real value terms between 2000 and 20 Scrubber/dryers are expected to represent the most significant growth sector in real terms during the forecast period, whilst the market for other floor cleaning machines is expected to show modest growth.
Factors critical to the success of a company operating in the UK market for industrial and commercial cleaning machines include:
* acquisitions
* the recognition of customer requirements
* the provision of a full product line
* a flexible approach
* after-sales service
* appropriate company marketing
* the use of IT
* distribution channels used
Sales through janitorial distributors accounted for 90.2 million (euro139.8 million) of the UK market for cleaning machines 19 Direct sales represented the remaining 50.8 million (euro78.7 million) of the cleaning machine market.
