EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
MSI believe that French consumption of packaging
materials used by the food and drink industry increased by some 4 percent during 1996
to a volume of 6 140 000 tonnes. French consumption of packaging materials has
increased significantly between 1992 and 1996 as a result of increased demand
in food and drink export markets.
Glass packaging accounted for the largest share of
the market representing some 63 percent of French food and drink packaging in volume
terms, followed by plastic packaging which accounted for some 16 percent of the total
during 1996. MSI believe that the consumption of paper and board represented
some 13 percent of the market during the same year whilst tinplate accounted for 7 percent of
the total. The remaining 1 percent is accounted for aluminium packaging.
There are a number of factors which impact on the
consumption of packaging materials. These include the following:
- - legislative requirements
- - the fortunes of the food and drink
industry
- - retailers' preferences
- - consumer trends and
lightweighting
- - the qualities of the materials
MSI forecast that the rate of increase in the
consumption of packaging materials will slow down between 1997 and 2001 as a
result of legislative requirements to reduce the weight of
packaging.
Consumption of glass packaging increased by 5 percent
during 1996 as a result of strong export markets in the wine sector, as well as
the effect of the transfer towards smaller contents requiring more units
packaged for equivalent volumes of liquid. Furthermore, the low recycling rate
of glass has necessitated the introduction of new glass impacting on the volume
used by the food and drink industry
Plastic packaging has had the strongest rate of
increased between 1992 and 1996 due to the flow of innovative packaging
solutions introduced onto the market. Furthermore, plastic packaging competes
directly with all the other packaging materials in all food and drink end use
sectors, and is increasingly used as a substitute material.
Demand for paper and board decreased by 2 percent during
the review period despite the growing demand for single multipacks and single
packaging destined for the ready meals market. MSI believe that the major
factor which has affected demand for paper and board packaging is the reduction
of raw materials used by food and drink manufacturers to achieve cost
savings.
French consumption of tinplate and steel remained
stable during 1996. The strong demand for steel beverage cans was hindered by
the decreased demand for food tins.
The aluminium can consumption only increased by 1 percent
during 1996 reflecting the effects of the price of the raw material, which was
less competitive than steel. Furthermore, the demand for aluminium packaging
was affected by the reduction in the rate of growth of the food and drink
industry.
