EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MSI believe that the market for domestic kitchen furniture reached £905 million (€1 348 million) at msp in 2003. This was an overall increase of 8% in value terms during the review period. The main factors behind this trend was the level of construction output in the private and public housing sectors, and the buoyancy of the economy.
MSI believe that the proportion of the UK market for domestic kitchen furniture accounted for by the flat pack sector increased over the review period. Indeed, by 2003 the flat pack kitchen furniture market accounted for some 74% of the total market, equivalent to some £670 million (€998 million). This was due to improvements in the design and quality of flat pack kitchens.
By 2003, the replacement kitchen sector represented 67% of the total kitchen furniture market, being valued at some £609 million (€907 million). This was an increase in proportional importance since 1999 when the replacement sector accounted for 65% of the market. The value of the first installation market fluctuated somewhat during the review period, with a fall in value in 2001, and the sector accounted for 23% of the total market in 2003.
In 2003, the largest proportion of kitchens purchased in the UK could be classed as being in the budget range. Indeed, 58% of the market value was accounted for by this sector. Furthermore the value of the market for budget domestic kitchen furniture increased by 10% during the review period to reach £528 million (€787 million) in 2003. The second most significant sector was the middle of the range kitchens, with the higher value kitchens being the smallest proportion of the market.
MSI believe that the private sector continued to be the main buyer of domestic kitchen furniture during the review period. Indeed, in 2003 the private sector accounted for 91% of sales of kitchen furniture at £827 million (€1 232 million). Over the review period the value of the domestic kitchen furniture market accounted for by the public sector decreased by 7% of the total. This was largely due to decline in the construction of public sector housing.
MSI forecast that the value of the market for domestic kitchen furniture will continue to increase throughout the forecast period, albeit at a somewhat slower rate than during the review period. Indeed, it is forecast that by 2008 the value of the market will reach £938 million (€1 398 million), this being an overall increase of 3% in real value terms between 2004 and 2008.
