| The UK market for personal protective equipment (PPE) has increased by a marginal 1 percent during the review period, reaching some 36.82 million items in 2001. |
| The largest sector of the UK PPE market is accounted for by protective footwear, which in 2001 accounted for some 19 percent of the total market. |
| The manufacturing sector of industry has been the largest end user of PPE throughout the review period, albeit at a declining rate. Indeed, during 2001, sales to this end user sector accounted for some 61 percent of the total market. |
| Demand for PPE from cleaning and catering industries has witnessed the highest rates of growth, some 39 percent during the review period. |
| There are a number of factors which have a significant effect on the UK market for PPE. These include employment levels within end user sectors, increased awareness of H&S issues in the workplace, and the importance of the aesthetic appearance of PPE. |
| MSI forecast that the UK market for PPE will grow by some 4 percent during the period 2002 to 2006, taking the number of items of protective equipment to some 38.55 million in 2006. |
| Protective footwear is forecast to account for the largest volume of PPE sold during the forecast period. Indeed, during 2006, the proportional importance of this product sector will amount to some 19 percent, with the volume of footwear sold forecast at 7.28 million pairs in 2006. |
| The manufacturing sector of industry will continue to account for the largest volume of PPE purchased throughout the review period. However, the proportional importance of sales to this end user sector will decrease from 60 percent in 2002, to some 53 percent in 2006. |
