Following declines in The UK market for domestic floorcoverings in 1998, both in terms of value and volume, the market returned to growth in 1999 and decreased by 1 percent in volume terms in 2000 while the value of sales rose by 1 percent during the same year.
MSI believe that two of major factors that influence demand for domestic floorcoverings are consumer expenditure on durable goods and expenditure on DIY products. MSI estimate that expenditure on DIY products increased by 9 percent in 2000. Growth in this market is largely due to increased media coverage of the topic, in particular on television and in popular lifestyle magazines.
Carpet is by far the largest sector of the UK market for domestic floorcoverings. In value terms, carpet represented some 72 percent of the market in 2000. Due to the lower price of carpet compared with other floorcoverings its proportional importance is more significant in volume than in value terms. However, the proportional importance of the sector has declined since 1996 due to the increasing popularity of smooth floorcoverings. In particular wood and laminate floorcoverings have increased in market share during the review period. MSI believe this is largely due to the increasing use of smooth floorcoverings on popular home improvement television programmes and a shift in general fashion trends away from carpet floorcoverings.
The value of the UK market for domestic floorcoverings is expected to continue to rise during the forecast period. Indeed, it is forecast that sales of domestic floorcoverings will rise by 6 percent between 2001 and 2005. However, the volume of sales is expected to peak in 2002 before declining marginally between 2003 and 2005.
There are a number of critical success factors that manufacturers of domestic floorcoverings must be aware of. These include:
