LIST OF DIAGRAMS
1. Performance Of The UK Fast Food Market, By Sector, 2000
MSI believe that the value of the UK fast food market increased by some 20 percent between 1995 and 1998. A further real increase of 7 percent to a value of 7039 million (euro10.06 billion) at 1998 prices is projected for 1999. Although the value of the market has increased, the performance of the individual sectors within the market varied significantly during the review period.
The largest sector within the UK fast food market is the sandwich sector. During the review period, this sector developed significantly in terms of market value. The growth in the sector is due to the trend towards more healthy diets and an increase in the level of innovation which has been introduced to the sector. This sector is however, becoming saturated and MSI forecast that growth within the sector will begin to slow down before the end of the forecast period, although overall growth will be some 20 percent in real terms between 2000 and 2004.
The hamburger market is the second largest sector of the fast food market. MSI believe that the hamburger market has recovered despite the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy scare in 1995. Trade sources report that the market increased by some 29 percent between 1996 and 1998, with further growth of 7 percent in real terms projected for 1999.
The home delivery sub-sector of the pizza and pasta market also expanded significantly during the review period, and the pizza and pasta market is projected to reach a value of 882 million (euro1.3 billion) at 1998 prices in 1999. Competition is expected to increase within the sector as the number of new companies emerging in the sector rises. MSI believe that this sector will continue to show the most significant growth of all major fast food sectors throughout the forecast period.
The ethnic food sector is facing increased competition as international travel increases which therefore causes an increase in demand for a wider variety of international foods. The most buoyant sector within the ethnic food market is the relatively new Mexican sector. MSI project that demand for Mexican food will amount to 80 million (euro114 million) at 1998 prices in 1999.
MSI believe that a number of opportunities for suppliers exist within the fast food industry. Indeed, it is reported that there is potential in the development of innovative packaging, particularly for the Chinese and Indian sectors which are diversifying their services to provide chilled meals which require packaging to prolong the shelf life for the food. MSI believe that it is also important that suppliers concentrate on working closely with their customers in order to help companies adapt to the legislation which requires all genetically modified foods to be identified on food packaging.
