This report considers the UK market for laundry
and dry cleaning services. The main market sectors are retail laundry and dry
cleaning and corporate textile services, mainly washroom, workware and other
textile rental. In 1999, it is estimated that sales in this market reached
£1.23bn, of which £528m represented retail sales and £977m
sales to the corporate sector. Since 1995, growth has been strongest in the
corporate market, with growth in sales averaging 4.7 percent a year. Growth in retail
sales over the same period was slower, at 3 percent a year.
The retail market is
served mainly by High Street dry cleaners, launderette operators and
traditional laundries. Together, these operators offer a variety of services,
ranging from the laundering of household linen and the dry cleaning of suits
and dresses to minor clothing repairs and alterations. Some retail operators
also offer other services, such as shoe repairs and key cutting on a `one-stop
shop' basis. Corporate textile services comprise workwear rental, towel rental
and conventional laundry services, for a range of commercial and industrial
users, such as manufacturing companies, hospitals, nursing homes, hotels and
other firms operating in the retail, transport and leisure industries.
The
retail sector competes with other suppliers of consumer goods and services for
the disposable income of households, and although this has recently been
growing at a relatively healthy rate, such competition has been strong. Also,
as domestic washing machines have become more widespread, alternatives to the
use of retail laundry services have become more readily available. The health
of the corporate laundry and dry cleaning sector is also closely linked with
that of the economy as a whole. However, in some subsectors of this market,
alternative products exists that serve a similar purpose. In the washroom
services market in particular, linen towel hire services have been meeting
strong competition from suppliers of paper towels and warm-air dryers.
An
increasing volume of legislation, originating at both European Union (EU) and
UK government levels has affected both sectors of the market. This legislation
has affected many aspects of the UK laundry and dry cleaning business, and has
given rise to regulations dealing with such matters as the use of chemical
solvents, pollution control, wages and hours of work, maternity leave, unfair
dismissal and data protection.
Future prospects are mixed. The retail
sector faces challenges from the increasingly widespread availability of
domestic washing machines, and a slowdown in the growth of personal disposable
income. Also, as recent trends have suggested, growth prospects for corporate
textile services are not as good as for other parts of the services sector. In
summary, by the year 2004, the value of the retail market is expected to reach
£527m compared with a prediction of £977m for the corporate
market.
