The total value of UK feature-length films in 1996 was £741m, which represents a rise of 241 percent since 1990. Advance figures indicate that in 1997 slightly fewer films were made (116) and the total budget was £562.8m.
The UK has scored three international hits in the last 2 to 3 years, with The Full Monty, Trainspotting and Bean. These films have given the UK film industry a higher profile and have shown that UK filmmakers can make more than just period drama.
Cinema admissions in the UK have risen by 23.4 percent and revenues have increased by 44.4 percent since 1991. However, most UK-originated films never get a wide release. Around 40 percent of them get no release at all, and 35 percent of the remainder are given only a limited release.
Distribution is the weakest sector of the UK film industry. Most distributors are linked to the big US film companies, so they fill their schedules mostly with US-made films. The distributors are also involved in video distribution -- both rental and sales.
One of the key developments in the industry during 1997/1998 has been the creation of the Film Policy Review Group (FPRG). Its first report was published in March 1998 and made many recommendations, including an `All Industry Fund' which would `improve the development, distribution, and marketing of British films, as well as their production'.
The most practical change brought about by the Labour Government has been the introduction of a 100 percent tax write-off on the development costs of films with a budget of less than £15m.
Key Note predicts that UK film production is unlikely to remain at the same high level over the next few years. However, the quality of those films that are produced will rise and they will be more likely to be seen by the general public.
