EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK film industry serves both indigenous UK filmmakers and foreign companies, including those from the US, that choose for professional reasons to make films in the UK. In 2000, the total cost of making films in the UK was £804.3m. In terms of investment, this made the UK the third-largest film industry in the world, after the US and Japan. In the same year, the UK made 98 films, ranking joint ninth in the world by number of films produced.

A total of 382 films were released in cinemas in the UK in 2000. These films generated a box-office revenue of £577.3m — an increase of 7.9 percent from the previous year. UK cinema admissions have shown an almost continuous rise since 1982, reaching 142.5 million in 2000, and are expected to have continued to increase in 2001.

A major development in the UK film market has been the growth of multiplex cinemas, which increased in number by 126.5 percent between 1995 and 2000. However, the multiplex boom is now appearing to slow, and the cinema industry is entering a phase of consolidation. The number of new screens to be added by multiplex developments is, therefore, expected to be low. Odeon Cinemas and ABC Cinemas merged in 2000, and the combined chain is now the largest single owner of cinema screens in the UK.

The most interesting recent development in the UK film industry was the launch of the Film Council in April 2000. This is a government-funded body, which has been organised by the film industry. The indigenous UK film industry is regarded as fragmented, and the aim of the Film Council is to increase its integration and help to form a sustainable stand-alone industry. The Council has organised several initiatives to improve British films and the UK film industry. It will, however, be 4 or 5 years before it is known whether the Film Council has succeeded or failed.

The DVD (digital versatile disc) has been readily accepted by the British consumer, with sales almost quadrupling between 1999 and 2000. This technology is expected to continue its rapid growth in the retail and rental markets. However, Key Note believes that it is too early to announce the death of video. Video recorders have penetrated 90 percent of UK households, and it will be a long time before DVD players reach a similar level of penetration.

Key Note forecasts that the number of films made in the UK will increase to 126 by 2006, and that their production cost will rise to £1.41bn at constant 2001 prices in the same year. Admissions and box-office revenues are expected to rise continuously within the forecast period.
