EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the cost of security breaches in the UK will reach £6bn in 2002, with the costs rising rapidly at 20 percent per annum, reflecting the increasing reliance of the UK economy on IT systems. Spending on products and services to prevent security breaches is estimated to be £6.65bn in 2002. Spending will rise strongly in 2002 (as it did in 2001), reflecting the growing importance of protecting IT systems for UK organisations.
This report focuses on two non-overlapping sectors of the IT security market: spending on security breach prevention (covering spending on security products and services and the Millennium Bug) and the costs of security breaches (covering the direct costs of suffering a security breach and the costs of software piracy in the UK). Security-specific products and services are taking a growing share of the total spend on security breach prevention, indicating that companies are focusing more of their spending on information security, rather than on areas such as physical security and IT maintenance.
Important factors shaping the market are the growth of corporate networks generally and the rise of e-business in particular. This is opening access to corporate IT systems from persons outside of the organisation, increasing group working and mobile/remote working, and therefore increasing the access points to sensitive and vital information. At the same time, the costs of losing data are accelerating as companies come to rely more heavily on their IT assets. This is leading to companies taking a strategic view of IT security.
Factors impacting on specific sectors of the market include the terrorist attacks in the US on 11th September 2001, which are leading to increased interest in disaster recovery, business continuity services and the continued threat (indeed growing threat) of virus and hacker attacks on companies, which is aiding sales of antivirus and firewall products. There are also moves by major software vendors to keep security flaws in their products secret until patches have become available to make them secure.
In the future, spending on security beach prevention is set to grow very strongly in the UK. Spending will become increasingly network centric and will focus strongly on 3A software (administration, authorisation and authentication).
