EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK software market was worth £4.87bn in 1997, with the market having risen by 12.9 percent in the year. The UK software market represents 17.9 percent of the western European software market and around 6 percent of the world market. The software market has been aided by a general trend away from customised applications to packaged software and high demand for personal computer (PC) software packages. However, value sales have been held back by lower average selling prices per licence.

The UK computer software market breaks down into three main sectors: systems software, applications tools and applications software. Applications software is the largest sector of the market, holding 48.4 percent of market sales. The systems software and applications tools markets are of roughly equal size to each other. Since 1993, the market has shifted towards applications tools and away from systems software, with applications software generally holding its share of total sales.

The pace of change in the industry has recently increased due to the surge of interest in the Internet, other forms of online services, server-based networking, and new programming languages, such as Java. The key issues facing the industry are:

* year 2000 (Y2K) compliance and the European Monetary Union (EMU)
* information technology (IT) skills shortages, which could make new software development harder
* the growth of networked environments (e.g. the thin client computer model)
* increased attention to scaleability and clustering
* the growth of object technologies and object wars
* new applications development languages (i.e. Java)
* legal battles (e.g. Sun versus Microsoft, US Department of Justice versus Microsoft)
* potential of electronic software distribution
* growth of global software deals
* the growth of computer viruses.

The UK software market is expected to grow by 56.8 percent between 1998 and 2002. The major growth sector will be application tools.
