EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The UK computer services market reached
£11.1bn in 1997, having grown by 14.2 percent between 1996 and 1997, and by
66.3 percent between 1993 and 1997. Outsourcing has been the key engine for market
growth, with outsourcing revenues having risen by 201.7 percent between 1993 and 1997.
Operational services at £4.07bn are the largest sector of the
market, followed by professional services (£3.3bn), systems/solutions
(£2.68bn) and maintenance (£1.04bn).
The key issues facing
the service industry currently are:
* the shift towards networking and networked
computer environments (including the management of distributed systems and the
growth of the Internet)
* the year 2000 problem and similar problems
like European Monetary Union (EMU)
* problems over information
technology (IT) staff recruitment
* service industry consolidation
* the changing structure of outsourcing contracts.
A number of key trends will impact on the services
market over the next 5 years. These main trends will be:
* increased competition in the marketplace, as
software and hardware companies increasingly move into services
*
increased consolidation, especially in areas like training and education where
commoditisation is on the increase
* a new breed of UK-owned services
groups will arise, like Delphi, which will leverage their strong position or
expertise in one sector into others
* takeovers, mergers and
acquisitions will continue to grow in number and aggregate value.
By the year 2001, the UK computer services market
will be worth an estimated £18.39bn, compared with £11.31bn in
1997. The computer services industry is expected to experience value growth of
62.5 percent between 1997 and 2001, or at an annual average rate of 12.9 percent.
Annual growth is expected to be highest between 1997 and 1999, the period
when the impact of spending on the year 2000 problem and EMU will be greatest.
