EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK plant hire market had an estimated value of £1.85bn in 1998. The market was split between plant hire, worth £1.07bn, and tool hire, worth £777m. The market is believed to have grown very strongly in 1998/1999, at 21.3 percent, although much of this expansion is through acquisition and overseas growth.
Plant hire refers to the rental of capital items of plant and equipment to professional users and private individuals, generally involved in construction work. The market consists of two major sectors, with just over 60 percent of turnover deriving from the hire of heavy construction plant and the remainder deriving from the hire of tools and other small items.
Although the construction industry has been hit particularly hard in the recession, the plant hire sector weathered the storm well. This was due to many of the larger firms selling off their plant and equipment, and hiring the items instead. Since 1997, demand has picked up again, helped by expenditure on infrastructure.
A more buoyant mood in the construction market bodes well for the plant hire business, since construction firms are unlikely to spend money on capital purchases of plant and machinery so soon after a severe recession. Thus, additional demand for earthmoving equipment and other items will most likely be met by the plant hire companies.
The projected growth in the construction industry, whilst relatively modest, is expected to bring good growth for the plant hire industry. Turnover is expected to have grown to £2.48bn by the year 2003, with an average growth of around 6 percent. In addition, the spate of Millennium projects is expected to boost plant hire work in 1999 and 2000.
