EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 2000, the UK plant and tool hire market was valued at £2.76bn. The plant hire sector took just under three-quarters of this figure, with tool hire accounting for the remainder. The hire of scaffolding and access towers is included in these values.

Plant hire covers the rental of capital items of plant and equipment to professional users, generally in the construction market, and often includes the provision of operators as part of the hire contract. Tool hire refers to the rental of smaller items of plant and small hand tools, often to the general public and small builders.

The construction market has recovered well in recent years, although it has yet to reach the levels seen before the recession. However, despite the demand from construction companies for hired plant, competitive forces and overcapacity in the market have reduced plant hire margins to the extent that most major players issued profit warnings in 2000.

The UK market is nearing saturation and plant utilisation needs to be around 90 percent for heavy plant to cover its costs. In addition, the prices of new construction equipment have been cut, thus affecting the second-hand market price for plant at the end of its hire life. The tool hire market is performing better than the plant hire sector, but considerable amalgamation is occurring as companies seek to create national networks and woo large corporate customers.

The plant hire sector is expected to grow relatively slowly, with road investment subdued and poor prospects for construction in the UK. The US and Continental Europe are expected to provide a boost to larger companies. Tool hire prospects are much more buoyant, and Key Note forecasts continued strong growth and increased acquisition activity in the period to 2005.
