EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Franchising is now an established part of a growing number of industry and service sectors of the UK economy, with the number of franchises undertaken growing annually. Franchising has come to be seen as a way for a brand or company to extend its reach across the UK -- even globally -- and for budding entrepreneurs to enter business.

Franchising is a growing market in the UK. An increasing number of companies in a varied range of sectors are seeking to set up franchise networks, and there is a growing number of prospective franchisees.

In 1997, the gross annual turnover of UK business format franchises reached £7bn, growth of 9.4 percent over 1996 and 37.3 percent over 1993.

By percentage of units, dairy, retail and direct selling and distribution are the largest sectors of the UK franchising market.

The UK franchising market is set for growth into the next century, with an increasing number of US, Canadian, Australian and continental European operations set to establish franchised operations in the UK. Key Note forecasts that by 2002, the UK franchising industry will be generating turnover of £11.6bn, growth of 65.7 percent over 1997.

In general, franchising looks set to remain a growing segment of the UK economy. The sector thrives in strong economies and with easier access to international markets -- and a proliferation in niche retailing and service provision -- the number of franchised systems available to prospective franchisees is also forecast to increase.
