EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Key Note estimates that the revenues generated by UK airports increased by 7.7 percent in 2000, to £2.15bn, despite the drop in commercial revenues triggered by the abolition of intra-EU duty free from July 1999.

The effect on UK airports of the abolition of duty free was greater than had been expected. Nevertheless, total revenues grew as air traffic demand increased. One of the main areas of growth in demand was regional airports, notably Stansted and London Luton. Much of the growth at these regional airports was due to the rapid expansion of low-cost carriers such as Go, Buzz, easyJet and Ryanair.

Between 1996 and 1999, the share of total UK airport passengers taken by the top three airports — Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester — fell from 69.4 percent to 65.1 percent, yet there was little difference in the share held by the top ten, 20 or 30 airports over the same period.

BAA PLC dominates UK airport ownership: in 1999, it accounted for 68 percent of all the revenues generated by UK airports. During the 1990s, BAA, TBI PLC, Manchester Airport PLC and National Express Group PLC all invested in or took an interest in overseas airports.

Key Note forecasts that the number of passengers at UK airports will increase steadily between 2000 and 2004. Real revenue and freight tonnage will broadly follow the growth in the number of passengers.
