EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the revenues generated by UK airlines reached £15.2bn in 2001, 26.7 percent higher than they were in 1997. The revenue generated by overseas airlines for services, into and out of, the UK was worth approximately £7.4bn in 2001, a rise of 25.4 percent since 1997. UK airlines accounted for 67.3 percent of sales at UK airports in 2001.
Scheduled passenger services constitute the most important sector of the UK airline industry and accounted for 71.7 percent of the revenue generated in 2001. There has been little change in the breakdown between scheduled passenger revenues, non-scheduled passenger revenues, cargo and other revenues since 1997.
The proportion of scheduled UK airline passengers travelling on international routes increased between 1997 and 2000 as domestic routes lost share and short-haul international routes gained share of the market. Short-haul international routes were stimulated by the development of low-fare carriers.
As the average distance travelled on UK scheduled airline services falls, revenues generated per passenger kilometre are growing slower than the distance travelled, showing that the real price of scheduled air fares is falling.
The growth in non-scheduled services is slower than the growth in scheduled services as low-fare carriers erode the seat-only market for charter flights and short-haul scheduled flights. The largest low-fare carrier in Europe, Ryanair, is the second-largest carrier of passengers in the UK.
Independent holidays and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) are the fastest growing purposes to travel, as the development of lower fares with more regional departures has stimulated leisure travellers.
The slowdown in the market in 2001 was due to the effects of foot and mouth disease on the overseas market in the early part of the year and the impact of 11th September in the second half of the year. Nevertheless, the demand for air travel will grow more quickly between 2002 and 2005.
