This Key Note Market Report examines the UK bookselling industry. The bookselling market in the UK, is one of the largest in Europe and is certainly the strongest in terms of market growth. There are a great variety of booksellers ranging from the small independents and local newsagents, to the large retail chains and supermarkets. Bookselling is also conducted online and by book clubs. This report focuses mainly on the high-street booksellers.
In 2003, Key Note estimates that the value of the retail book market was £3.83bn, which represented an increase of around 3.5% on 2002. More than two-thirds of the market was accounted for by consumer sales. The remainder comprise academic and professional books and school books.
The industry's major booksellers include Amazon.co.uk. Ltd, Book Club Associates Ltd, Borders (UK) Ltd, Ottakar's PLC, Waterstone's Booksellers Ltd, and WH Smith PLC. It is notable that of these six booksellers, one sells books online and one sells under various book-club brand names. Meanwhile, the supermarkets are becoming a significant factor in the marketplace because of their price-cutting on bestsellers. Book buying occurs across all social groups but is strongest among those from the AB social grades.
The market is also influenced by those who buy many books a year, the so-called heavy book buyers. Heavy book buyers are those who buy ten or more books a year. Pricing is the most important issue for booksellers and this is becoming a concern for publishers as well. There are worries that selective and highly variable price-cutting is damaging and counter-productive.
Key Note estimates that the value of retail book sales will rise by 13.1% between 2004 and 2008. Bookselling space is likely to increase, with retailers such as Ottakar's expanding and supermarkets enlarging their book sections.
