EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The fast food and home delivery market represents a fast-growing sector in the UK eating out market, accounting for almost 32 percent of the consumer catering market. Since 1995, the fast food and home delivery market has expanded by 23.5 percent, reaching an estimated £6.98bn in 1999.

The largest and most successful sector is that of sandwiches, followed by burgers, fish and chips, pizzas, chicken and other fast food outlets. ‘Other’ outlets mainly comprises ethnic takeaways, notably Chinese and Indian, and other fast foods including baked potatoes, kebabs, muffins, doughnuts, hot dogs, as well as the more recent coffee shops and gourmet soup bars.

Branding has become more sophisticated in the fast food market, as reflected in the numerous link-ups and joint ventures between leading food service companies, leisure companies and the large brewers. This has resulted in branded fast food outlets becoming a common site in many locations, including motorway service areas, leisure and shopping centres, transport terminals and petrol forecourts.

Competition in the marketplace has intensified during 1999/2000, with the major grocery multiples expanding their in-store catering operations, including hot pizzas, rotisserie products and ethnic takeaways. Many High Street retailers, e.g. Boots and Marks and Spencer, have also introduced coffee bars in their stores, selling premium coffee, sandwiches and snacks. Recent entrants have exploited the growing trend towards snacking and convenience foods. These include the branded coffee shop chains, e.g. Starbucks and Aroma, and the gourmet soup bars, e.g. Soup Opera and Soup Works.

Future growth in the UK fast food and home delivery market will be more modest than previously, due to intense competition between the leading players, and smaller outlets generating lower sales. Key Note forecasts that the market will experiencea year-on-year growth of between 2 percent and 4 percent, to reach £8.2bn in 2004. The strongest growth is expected from the sandwiches and burgers sectors.
