EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report analyses the UK shopfitting market, which in 2001 was estimated to be worth £1.77bn.

The report covers standard and bespoke shopfitting products. Background statistics are given on commercial construction output and new orders. In 2000, private commercial construction output was £12.6bn and new orders were £9.7bn. These figures cover a range of commercial work and are of interest to shopfitters because of the work they carry out in non-retail premises, such as financial institutions, museums, leisure centres, etc. New orders for private sector shops in 2000 were worth £1.9bn, the same as the previous year. Data are provided on retail sales, in terms of weekly sales and index growth.

Structurally, the industry is undergoing a period of consolidation, with takeovers still taking place. Profiles are given of leading players in the shopfitting market, including Havelock Europa, Morris & Spottiswood, Pel, Sloane Group, Styles & Wood and Withey Contracts.

In the Buying Behaviour section of the report, the retail sector is divided into food versus non-food sectors. The food sector accounts for 69 percent of total sales and 31 percent non-food. Analysis is also given for large versus small store sales. The Current Issues section discusses the effect of the Internet on shopping, Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act and its 2004 target, the influence of leisure on retailing and the changing structure of the retail market. Corporate changes and trends are also discussed, pointing out a trend towards a greater involvement in shopfitting of companies with construction industry experience.

In view of the current uncertainties in the global economic and political scene, Key Note has made a cautious forecast for growth in the shopfitting market. By 2006, the market is forecast to reach £2.08bn, representing growth of 17.5 percent from 2001.
