EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The UK building contracting market had an
estimated output valued at £40.8bn in 1993 compared with £48.1bn in
1989, a fall of 15.3 percent over 4 years. Expressed at constant prices to show the
real movement in volume, the fall amounted to 18.2 percent. The period covered is that
in which the main influences of the UK recession impacted on the industry.
The UK building contracting market is part of the overall construction sector
which it shares with civil engineering. Building contracting covers activities
such as project management, site preparation, the acquisition of material and
provision of subcontractors, the erection of structures and their fitting out.
The UK industry includes a number of major contractors and supporting services
well able to serve the needs of the country and achieve important overseas
contracts.
The UK building construction industry has felt the full
impact of the UK recession during the period reviewed. This has caused some
restructuring in the industry, but has left leading players ready to take
advantage of the upturn in the economy which is showing signs of materialising,
as at the third quarter of 1994.
There are a number of factors,
relating to a natural caution by investors and individuals after a severe
recession plus a tight reign on government expenditure, which are likely to
limit demand for new building construction work in the short-term future.
Forecasts are, therefore, expecting a modest positive growth in 1994 followed
by increases of the same order in the following 2 years.
