EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The domestic heating market was worth an estimated
£892.9m in 1999, a growth rate of 2.8 percent from 1998, reflecting the buoyancy
in the housing market. Nearly 1.4 million domestic heating systems were
installed in the UK in 1999, according to industry figures. The continuing
improved economy, revived consumer confidence and high expectations of comfort,
help to provide a positive impetus to the market.
The domestic heating
market includes the sources of energy that fuel the heating systems, the
appliances and ancillary equipment used to control and distribute the energy,
and the fitting and maintenance of the equipment by the installers. The figures
in this report are for installed and portable heating equipment. The three main
sectors in this market are as follows:
* boilers fuelled by gas, oil, solid fuel and
electricity
* radiators
* electric space heaters.
Manufacturers predict healthy growth in the sale
of boilers, particularly in the combination boiler sector, as well as
improvements in the sales of condensing boilers. A growth in radiator sales is
forecast within the new housing sector.
Strong increases are forecast for
the public housing repair and maintenance (R&M) sector, spurred by the need
to fulfil more stringent environmental and energy efficiency
criteria.
Continued growth in the gas combination boiler sector is predicted
from 39.8 percent by value of the total boiler market in 1998 to around 42 percent in 1999.
Sales of radiators and electric space heating are not expected to improve until
2000. The total domestic heating market is forecast to grow by 2.4 percent to reach
£914.1m in 2000.
