EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Key Note estimates that the UK market for kitchen furniture, including fitted kitchens, was worth £1.24bn in 1997. The major component of the market is self-assembly furniture, which accounted for £630m (50.8 percent of the market).

The fitted kitchens market was boosted by sales of electrical appliances such as cookers, ovens and fridges, as well as items most usually situated in the kitchen, such as washing machines. This market was valued at £2.49bn in 1997.

The market has picked up since the end of the last recession and received impetus from the revival of the housing market in 1996/1997. The vibrant housing market saw sales rise, as ordering a new kitchen is often the first significant purchase prior to moving home.

Increasingly, there is a heightening degree of vertical integration in the market, with many of the companies profiled within this report being both retailers and manufacturers. There is also a degree of horizontal integration, with many manufacturers having interests in bathroom furniture and other household furniture. Leading manufacturers in the UK include MFI Furniture Group, Spring Ram and Magnet. Major sellers of self-assembly kitchens include IKEA and B&Q.

Between 1998 and 2002, the market is forecast to grow by 9.3 percent to £1.38bn. The forecast economic recession from 1999 onwards, will adversely affect sales of custom-built, high-end kitchens, although the fitted kitchens market may see the growing importance of the flat-packed and self-assembly type units.
