This report provides an analysis of the UK medical
equipment and consumable supply industry and market. The largest purchaser of
medical equipment and consumable products in the UK is the National Health
Service (NHS), via the National Health Service Supplies Authority (NHSSA).
There are three main market sectors including: NHS with 74.7 percent of the
market, the independent acute care sector (13.2 percent) and nursing and residential
homes (12.1 percent). Key Note estimates that the market was worth £2.17bn in
1997, with an annual growth of 7.2 percent from 1996 and the UK is reported to be the
fifth largest market in the world, behind the US, Japan, Germany and France.
The market is forecast to rise to £3.15bn by the year 2002.
In
1997, there were around 1,295 companies supplying medical, surgical and
orthopaedic equipment and appliances. The marketplace is fragmented and
polarised, with the vast majority of sales being produced by 25 percent of
manufacturers and with only 8 percent of businesses having turnovers exceeding
£5m.
Exports have been rising steadily since 1993, an increase of
31 percent by 1997. However, exports for electromedical instruments have fallen by 18 percent
over the same period reflecting the strong competition from Germany and the US
and increasingly from Japan, which is increasing its European influence.
Overall imports have also risen steadily by 45 percent between 1993 and 1996, before
apparently slumping in 1997. Electromedical imports rose by 46 percent over the same
period and mostly came from Germany and the US.
The continuing funding
crisis in healthcare and the ensuing measures to curb and rationalise
expenditure has created difficult market conditions in the medical equipment
market throughout the developed world, as well as the UK. However, the
increasing efficiency of the health sector in treating greater numbers of
patients will ultimately create more demand for supplies. Manufacturers are
responding to the challenges of the market by developing equipment that
actively aids the improvements in efficiency and throughput. The current
Government is comprehensively reviewing the health sector and if the funding
issues are resolved, the demographics of an ageing population together with
increasing public expectations will ensure long-term growth.
