EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report examines the laboratory equipment and
consumable products market in the UK. The market for hospital and research and
development (R&D) materials and supplies is estimated to be worth
£5.67bn in 1996. This market can be divided into laboratory
instrumentation/equipment and consumables, chemicals, reagents and
non-laboratory equipment and supplies.
The total laboratory
instrumentation/equipment and consumables market was estimated to be worth
£1.4bn in 1996, with a growth between 1995 and 1996 of 10.5 percent. The largest
market sector is pharmaceuticals with 34.4 percent of the market, followed by the
National Health Service (NHS) with 30.3 percent.
Exports peaked in 1995, but
appear to be dropping off. Exports to Europe peaked at 43.7 percent in 1995, but are
slowing off as a result of healthcare and budget restrictions in those markets
and unfavourable trading conditions.
The public sector has been
severely hit by budget restrictions, particularly in capital spending, and the
position is unlikely to change much for the foreseeable future unless there is
a change of government. However, even then, the room for manoeuvre is likely to
be severely restricted. The industrial sector is also suffering some
restrictions. Growth in R&D has slowed down, with the largest sector,
pharmaceuticals, undergoing an unprecedented amount of consolidation and
turmoil. However, there are still opportunities for companies in specialist
niche markets and for companies with products that offer advantages in
performance and cost-effectiveness.
The market for laboratory equipment
and consumables is forecast to be worth £1.44bn in 1997, rising to
£1.5bn in 1998 and to £1.62bn by the year 2000.
