EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The UK market for laboratory equipment is highly diverse, including a broad range of scientific equipment and instruments, and laboratory consumables. It is both competitive and cost-sensitive, and is heavily dependent on government-run organisations and services, such as the National Health Service (NHS), government research establishments and higher education. In the industrial sector, the pharmaceutical industry is by far the largest user of laboratory equipment, followed by the chemical industry.

In 2000, the market was worth an estimated £1.75bn, following annual growth of 5.5 percent. Restrictions in government spending and in the public sector have significantly affected growth in the marketplace, particularly in capital expenditure. However, the Government has been allocating significant extra funding to the health service and the higher education system, and to encourage initiatives in research and development (R&D) via the Research Councils.

The NHS was the largest single user group in 2000. The independent acute care sector, although the smallest individual sector, showed more rapid growth, reflecting the trend in the independent sector to build up specialist services and develop partnerships through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

Of the industrial sectors, the pharmaceutical industry was by far the largest. This sector has confounded predictions that consolidation in the marketplace - through the high levels of merger and acquisition activity - would lead to a reduction in R&D activity. In contrast, other industrial sectors are showing relatively sluggish growth, reflecting the UK's low investment in R&D - compared with that of many other developed countries.

The total market for laboratory equipment is forecast to increase in value by 30.7 percent between 2001 and 2005. Demand from the healthcare sector is set to continue rising, as the result of both demographic pressures and technology-driven expansion of treatment. The pharmaceutical industry is forecast to show continued growth, since R&D is considered crucial to success in that particular marketplace. It is predicted that the pharmaceutical industry will overtake the NHS as the single largest sector in this market. Also contributing to future growth, the Government is attempting to foster R&D activities in research organisations and the higher education system.
