In 2002, the UK videoconferencing market was worth £150.6m at rsp (reseller selling prices), an increase of 14.1 percent on 2001. Market growth has slowed since 2000, as a result of falling unit prices and the general squeeze on IT budgets in large organisations. Despite this slower rate of market value growth, the continuing improvement of the price/performance ratio for conferencing/collaboration products is making videoconferencing products and services more accessible and affordable, with the result that they are being used for a wider range of applications, such as training, education, sales meetings and supplier meetings, and by a wider range of companies, including more small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).
The videoconferencing market consists of three main sectors: client equipment (or endpoints); infrastructure equipment; and installation/rental services. Since 2000, infrastructure equipment and installation services have been the major growth sectors, principally due to higher levels of price erosion in the endpoints market.
Videoconferencing is ceasing to be a distinct form of conferencing and is becoming one aspect of a more comprehensive market, labelled `rich media conferencing', which involves organisations using multiple applications connected with video, audio and data communications. The widespread deployment and use of Internet protocol (IP) networks, means that video, audio and data conferencing are increasingly running over the same networks and being integrated together. Consequently, many videoconferencing vendors are now focusing on offering integrated, rich media conferencing/collaboration solutions.
In addition, changes in the market are resulting in significant changes in the distribution chain. Videoconferencing products have become more attractive to general audio-visual (AV) product distributors, given the erosion of profits made on products such as projectors and plasma screens. At the same time, the distribution channel has become more competitive, as equipment vendors broaden their distribution coverage. In addition, there has been growing competition in the reseller end of the distribution chain, as office and retail accounts take a greater role in the AV market.
The service sector has also experienced rising competition recently, with rental companies offering a wider range of services and potentially competing with value-added resellers. At the same time, resellers are increasingly moving into the value-added service segment, as the profit margins on videoconferencing equipment are reduced.
Between 2003 and 2007, the videoconferencing market will see an increased need for ad hoc scheduled videoconferencing, which will result in a strong demand for easy-to-use products. In addition, videoconferencing will increasingly become integrated with audio and web conferencing. As a rising number of personal computers (PCs) are provided with webcams that are fitted as standard, the PC-centric endpoint market will essentially become a software-only market.
