The value of the UK telecommunications industry at the end of March 2001 was estimated at £20.06bn, a 49.1 percent increase from March 1997. The fixed-line telecommunications sector holds the largest share of revenues at present but it is evident that fixed-line share is declining. However, the cellular telecommunications sector in comparison has experienced an increase. In 1996, the principal concerns dominating the telecommunications industry were liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation; or rather, the anticipation of these developments because most of the world's telecommunications markets were still closed there was scarcely any merger or acquisition activity, as most operators remained state-owned. Now, with most telecommunications markets open to competition and with mergers and acquisitions proceeding at a rapid pace, the emphasis has changed. In 2001, it is the startling surge of the mobile phone sector and the growth of data transmission which have captured the industry's attention.
There is a strong trend towards pan-European consolidation especially in the mobile sector. Significant economies can be found in the purchasing of infrastructure and handsets. An operator purchasing many millions of handsets a year can influence design and the rate at which new technology is introduced, to the disadvantage of its rivals. Such economies are at the forefront of most operators' minds as the industry moves to the next generation of mobile phones.
Liberalisation of the world's telecommunications sector has transformed the retail landscape. A raft of new entrants, including cable companies, resellers, Internet service providers (ISPs) and even broadcasters, have joined traditional operators. In the UK, digital television broadcasters BSkyB and ONdigital offer subscribers discounted telephone calls alongside their television services. The increase in capacity since 1996 and unrealistic market expectations have combined to create serious financial problems for all sections of the telecommunications industry in the UK and globally.
'Cellular' is the watchword in the UK and global telecommunications markets. There can be no doubt that the mobile phone is here to stay, with technological improvements occurring constantly. Although the telecommunications industry has already experienced phenomenal changes, the period of transformation is by no means over. Key Note expects continuing consolidation within all areas of the industry and further consumer acceptance of cellular telephony. The UK telecommunications market is forecast to increase by 28.6 percent between 2002 and 2006.
