EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key Note estimates that the closed circuit TV
(CCTV) market at end-user prices was worth £385m in 1997. Growth was
rapid between 1993 and 1995, but slowed in 1996 and 1997, mainly as a result of
falling equipment prices. In current value terms, Key Note forecasts a drop in
the market to £380m in 1998.
The market includes system design, equipment
supply, installation and maintenance. Security applications account for most of
the market, but CCTV is also widely used in transport safety and there are many
other applications.
The decline in the market is a result of its
advancing maturity and falling prices, but is being offset, to some extent, by
the availability of improved equipment, especially digital technology. The
image quality and versatility that can be achieved with equipment currently on
the market is vastly superior to that of 5 years ago and there is considerable
opportunity for upgrading CCTV surveillance schemes.
The equipment suppliers are finding that the
market is becoming more polarised between basic commodity equipment and
equipment offering advanced technological features. The bottom end of the
market is now extremely price sensitive and is becoming dominated by
distributors' own labels, which are also now penetrating the upper end of the
market. The high-technology (high-tech) end of the market is less price
sensitive and offers better margins.
UK manufacturers have been hard hit by the
strength of the pound but are still winning export contracts.
In volume
terms, Key Note expects the market to remain fairly flat between 1998 and 2000,
then to decline gradually. Assuming prices remain constant, Key Note forecasts
a market value of £365m in 2002. If manufacturers' prices continue to
fall, the market will experience an even sharper decline in value
terms.
