Key Note estimates that the market for the design,
supply, installation and maintenance of closed circuit TV (CCTV) systems
reached £400m in 1996, having grown by 14.3 percent from the previous year.
Security applications account for most of the market and the supply of CCTV
systems is estimated to account for 10.8 percent of the security industry's
turnover.
Manufacturers' sales of equipment, such as cameras, lenses,
video recorders, printers, control equipment, telemetry and ancillary equipment
accounts for around half of the end-user market, and the rest of the market
value comes from distributors' margins and charges for design, installation and
maintenance.
The market has received a strong boost from recent Home
Office support in the form of grants to pay part of the cost of installing town
centre and other community-based surveillance systems. There were many more
applicants than winners in the three competitions for the three rounds of
grants given so far, which indicates that a large potential market still
remains. High crime levels, especially the rising number of violent crimes,
together with government support for CCTV as part of the solution, have been
strong positive influences on the market. The gradual recovery of new building
activity in the commercial and industrial sectors is another helpful trend.
The CCTV equipment coming onto the market is showing rapid advances in
technology, which should improve the effectiveness of this form of security and
encourage upgrading of systems. Colour cameras are increasing their share of
the market and digital technology is advancing gradually. New cameras coming
onto the market in the last 2 years provide many technical advantages.
Low-priced systems are now available to bring CCTV within reach of far more
organisations and individuals.
The market is maturing and growth is
expected to slow to around 8 percent in 1997, but there are good prospects for
continued growth to at least 2001. There are also good prospects for exports of
equipment.
